Dimethyl Fumarate (Tecfidera) is an oral medication approved by the U.S. FDA for the treatment of relapsing forms of multiple sclerosis (MS). As a delayed-release capsule, it regulates the immune response through a unique pharmacological mechanism.

Indications for Dimethyl Fumarate (Tecfidera)

Primary Indications

Dimethyl Fumarate is indicated for the treatment of relapsing multiple sclerosis (RMS) in adults.

Clinically Isolated Syndrome (CIS).

Relapsing-Remitting Multiple Sclerosis (RRMS).

Active Secondary Progressive Multiple Sclerosis (SPMS).

Key Instructions

Patient Selection: Patients must be clearly diagnosed with the aforementioned relapsing forms of MS; it is not indicated for primary progressive multiple sclerosis (PPMS).

Age Restriction: The safety and efficacy of this medication in patients under 18 years of age have not been established.

Treatment Goals: Reduce the frequency of clinical relapses and the activity of MRI lesions, and delay the progression of disability.

Dosage Forms and Characteristics of Dimethyl Fumarate (Tecfidera)

120mg Capsules

Appearance: Green cap and white body, with black printing of "BG12 120mg" on the capsule body.

Use: Initial dose for the first 7 days of treatment (1 capsule twice daily).

240mg Capsules

Appearance: Fully green capsule body, with black printing of "BG-12 240mg" on it.

Use: Maintenance dose starting from day 8 (1 capsule twice daily).

Dosage Form Features

Delayed-Release Technology: Ensures the active ingredient is released in the intestinal tract, reducing gastric irritation.

Administration Requirement: Swallow the capsule whole; do not chew, crush, or sprinkle the contents on food.

Storage Methods for Dimethyl Fumarate (Tecfidera)

Temperature Requirement

Store at 15°C to 30°C (59°F to 86°F). Avoid freezing or exposure to high temperatures (e.g., inside a car, bathroom).

Light and Moisture Protection

Keep the capsules in their original bottle to avoid exposure to light and humid environments.

The desiccant inside the bottle must be retained; do not remove or ingest it.

Safe Storage

Store in a place out of the reach of children and pets, and use child-resistant bottle caps.

Handling of Special Cases: If the capsules change color, become damaged, or the desiccant container swells, discard the product immediately and contact a pharmacist.
