Ezetimibe (Zetia) is an oral lipid-lowering medication primarily used to reduce low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and other lipid levels in the blood. It works by inhibiting the absorption of cholesterol in the small intestine, and is often used in combination with statins or other lipid-lowering drugs to enhance the lipid-lowering effect.
Indications for Ezetimibe (Zetia)
Adult Primary Hyperlipidemia
Ezetimibe can be used in combination with statins, or alone when statins are not applicable.
As an adjunct to dietary control, it is used to reduce LDL-C levels in adults with primary hyperlipidemia (including heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia, HeFH).
Pediatric Patients with HeFH
For pediatric patients with HeFH aged 10 years and older, ezetimibe can be used in combination with statins as an adjunct to dietary control to reduce elevated LDL-C levels.
Mixed Hyperlipidemia
Ezetimibe can be used in combination with fenofibrate for adults with mixed hyperlipidemia, as an adjunct to dietary control to reduce LDL-C.
Homozygous Familial Hypercholesterolemia (HoFH)
For adult and pediatric patients with HoFH aged 10 years and older, ezetimibe can be used in combination with statins and other lipid-lowering therapies to reduce elevated LDL-C levels.
Homozygous Familial Sitosterolemia
Ezetimibe can also be used as an adjunct to dietary control to reduce elevated sitosterol and campesterol levels caused by homozygous familial sitosterolemia in adults and pediatric patients aged 9 years and older.
