How to Use Loteprednol Etabonate Suspension Eye Drops (Lotemax)
Administration Route
For ocular topical use only; do not inject or take orally.
Shake the suspension thoroughly before use to ensure the drug is evenly dispersed.
Routine Dosage for Adults and Adolescents Aged 12 Years and Above
Treatment phase: The initial dosage is 1-2 drops per dose, 4 times a day.
Maintenance phase: The dosage can be gradually reduced to 2-3 times a day according to the control of inflammation.
Postoperative Inflammation
It is recommended to start using the drug 24 hours before surgery, 4 times a day, and continue using it for two weeks after surgery.
Usage Tips
Wash hands thoroughly before administering the medication.
Avoid contact between the dropper tip and any surface to prevent contamination.
After instilling the drops, gently press the lacrimal sac area for 1-2 minutes to reduce systemic absorption.
If multiple eye medications need to be used, an interval of at least 5 minutes should be maintained between them.
Contact lens wearers should wait for 15 minutes after using the medication before putting on their contact lenses.
Dosage Adjustment of Loteprednol Etabonate Suspension Eye Drops (Lotemax)
Adjustment Based on Severity of Inflammation
For severe inflammation, the dosage can be increased to 1 dose every 2 hours, and gradually reduced as symptoms improve.
For long-term use (more than 2 weeks), regular monitoring of intraocular pressure is required.
Patients with Hepatic Impairment
Systemic absorption of the topically administered drug is limited, so no dosage adjustment is needed.
However, patients with severe liver disease should use it with caution.
Patients with Renal Impairment
No dosage adjustment is required, but patients with end-stage renal disease should be monitored for adverse reactions during use.
Medication Use in Special Populations for Loteprednol Etabonate Suspension Eye Drops (Lotemax)
Pregnant Women
Animal studies have shown that corticosteroids may cause teratogenicity; the use during pregnancy requires weighing the pros and cons.
It is recommended to use the drug only when the potential benefit outweighs the risk, and the minimum effective dosage should be used.
Lactating Women
It is not yet clear whether the drug is excreted into breast milk. The decision to discontinue breastfeeding or stop using the drug should be made based on the importance of the drug to the mother.
Diabetic Patients
The drug may increase blood glucose levels, so enhanced monitoring of blood glucose is required.
