Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as "Lou Gestational Sickness", is a rare progressive neurodegenerative disease with few treatments. Most patients die within 2 to 5 years after diagnosis. Edaravone is a neuroprotectant that can effectively scavenge free radicals, protecting nerves from oxidative stress and neuronal apoptosis. This article mainly introduces the usage and dosage of Edaravone injection.
Usage and dosage of Edaravone injection
Recommended dose
The recommended dose of Edaravone is 60 mg intravenous infusion, administered within 60 minutes according to the following schedule: the initial treatment cycle is 14 days, daily administration, followed by a 14-day rest period; the subsequent treatment cycle is 14 days, daily administration for 10 days, followed by a 14-day rest period.
How to use Edaravone
Edaravone injection is for intravenous injection only. Do not use if the oxygen indicator has turned blue or purple before opening the package. Once the package is opened, use it within 24 hours. Whenever solution and container permit, injectable drug products should be visually inspected for particulate matter and discoloration prior to administration.
Each 60 mg dose of edaravone injection is given as two consecutive 30 mg IV bags over 60 minutes (infusion rate is approximately 1 mg/minute [3.33 mL/minute]). Stop the infusion immediately at the first observation of any signs or symptoms consistent with an allergic reaction. Other drugs should not be injected into the bag or mixed with edaravone injection.
DOSAGE FORMULATION AND DOSAGE
Edaravone is supplied for intravenous infusion in single-dose polypropylene bags containing 30 mg of edaravone in 100 mL of isotonic sterile aqueous solution. The bags are then repackaged with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). The outer packaging also contains an oxygen absorber and oxygen indicator to minimize oxidation. Each bag contains the following inactive ingredients: L-cysteine hydrochloride hydrate (10 mg), sodium bisulfite (20 mg). Sodium chloride is added to make it isotonic, and phosphoric acid and sodium hydroxide are added to adjust the pH to 4.
Storage Instructions
Store at 25°C (77°F). Excursions are permitted from 15°C to 30°C (59°F to 86°F) [see USP Controlled Room Temperature]. Protect from light. Use packaging prior to use to prevent oxygen degradation. Oxygen indicator will turn blue or purple if oxygen exceeds acceptable levels. Once packaging is opened, use within 24 hours.
