Alkeran(Melphalan) Side Effects

The main effect of ALKERAN (melphalan) is bone marrow suppression, but other adverse reactions, including hypersensitivity and secondary malignancies, may also occur.

Side Effects of ALKERAN (Melphalan)

The most common and serious side effect of ALKERAN (melphalan) is bone marrow suppression, which can lead to thrombopenia, leukopenia, and anemia. These conditions require close monitoring and potential dosage adjustments. Rare hypersensitivity reactions, including anaphylaxis, may occur, particularly after prolonged treatment. Additionally, secondary malignancies, such as acute leukemia or myeloproliferative syndrome, have been reported in patients undergoing long-term melphalan therapy. These risks increase with cumulative doses and prolonged use. As with any chemotherapy agent, the potential for carcinogenesis must be considered when prescribing ALKERAN. Frequent clinical assessments are necessary to manage and mitigate these risks.
